What it is

Rhassoul, a Moroccan lava clay that has been used for washing for centuries, joins the multani mitti for combination skin: oily in some places, not in others. Sandalwood oil gives it a warm, woody scent. Three 75 g bars in a paper tube you can recycle.

Scent. Sandalwood

Suited to

  • Combination skin
  • Face and body
  • Woody scent

How to use it

  1. 01

Evenings, after you brush. Wet the bar and your skin.

  2. 02

Lather for 30 seconds, in your hands or straight onto the skin.

  3. 03

Rinse. Rest the bar somewhere it can dry between uses.

Caution. External use only. Avoid the eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.

What is in it

  • Solum Fullonum (Fuller's Earth, Multani Mitti)

The clay in every Klayre product. Takes up oil from the surface of the skin.

  • Moroccan Lava Clay (Rhassoul)

A magnesium-rich Moroccan clay, traditionally used for washing skin and hair.

  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Soap Base

The base of every bar: a soap made with shea butter.

  • Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root, Azadirachta Indica (Neem) Leaf

Milled into every bar, as they have been in Indian bathing for generations.

What the research says

Every claim, with its source

For each ingredient: what the studies found, what kind of study it was, and what it does not show. We link the paper so you can read it yourself.

  • Rhassoul (Moroccan lava clay)

A magnesium-rich clay, mostly stevensite, traditionally used for washing skin and hair.

What it does not show. Almost all published rhassoul research is about adsorption in water treatment. There is no controlled study of it as a skin cleanser; its place here is tradition and texture.

  • Multani mitti (Fuller's earth)

An absorbent clay. That property is well measured, enough that researchers test it for lifting unwanted substances off skin.

What it does not show. These are decontamination studies, not sebum studies. No human trial shows that multani mitti reduces facial oil, so we say it absorbs, not that it controls oil.

  • Shea butter

The base of every bar is a soap made with shea butter.

What it does not show. In soap, most of the shea becomes soap, and the bar is rinsed off. So we make no barrier repair claim.

  • Soap and your skin

Every true soap is alkaline. We say so rather than call a bar pH balanced.

What it does not show. Clay does not make soap pH balanced. If your skin is very dry or easily irritated, a pH 5.5 wash may suit your face better than any bar.

  • Essential oils

Each bar is scented with an essential oil. These naturally contain fragrance allergens such as linalool and limonene.

What it does not show. The risk is lower in a rinse-off bar but not zero. If you react to fragrance, patch-test on the inner arm first.

What we do not claim

  • That it treats, cures or prevents acne or any skin condition. A soap is a cosmetic.
  • That it is antibacterial, detoxes, or draws out toxins.
  • That it is pH balanced. Every true soap is alkaline.
  • That it repairs the skin barrier, brightens, or is hypoallergenic.
