What it is
The deepest clean of the seven. Bentonite, a swelling clay with a large surface area, joins the multani mitti for very oily skin and for the body: back, chest and shoulders. Charcoal gives the bar its colour, and lavender its scent. Three 75 g bars in a paper tube you can recycle.
Scent. Lavender
Suited to
- Very oily skin
- Back and chest
- Evening shower
How to use it
- 01
Evenings, after you brush. Wet the bar and your skin.
- 02
Lather for 30 seconds, in your hands or straight onto the skin.
- 03
Rinse. Rest the bar somewhere it can dry between uses.
Caution. External use only. Avoid the eyes. Stop use if irritation occurs.
What is in it
Solum Fullonum (Fuller's Earth, Multani Mitti)
The clay in every Klayre product. Takes up oil from the surface of the skin.
Bentonite, Charcoal Powder
Bentonite swells in water and binds what it touches. Charcoal gives the bar its colour.
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Soap Base
The base of every bar: a soap made with shea butter.
Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root, Azadirachta Indica (Neem) Leaf
Milled into every bar, as they have been in Indian bathing for generations.
Full ingredient list
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter Soap Base, Solum Fullonum (Fuller's Earth), Bentonite, Charcoal Powder, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Powder, Azadirachta Indica (Neem) Leaf Powder, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil.
Find your bar
Same multani mitti. Seven second clays.
Every bar has the same base: shea butter soap, multani mitti, turmeric and neem. What changes is the second clay and the scent.
| Bar | With the multani mitti | Scent | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original | Pure multani mitti | Mitti attar, the smell of first rain on dry earth | You grew up on multani mitti and want it in a daily bar. |
| Pure | White kaolin | Lavender | Your skin is on the dry side, or you want the gentlest clean. |
| Glow | Yellow clay | Sweet orange peel | Your skin is normal and you want a bright, fresh-feeling wash. |
| Calm | Rose clay | Geranium flower | Your skin is normal to dry and you like a soft floral scent. |
| Fresh | French green clay | Peppermint | Your skin is oily by noon and you like a cool finish. |
| Balance | Rhassoul clay | Sandalwood | Your skin is oily in places and normal in others. |
| MidnightThis bar | Bentonite & charcoal | Lavender | Your skin is very oily, or you want a bar for back and chest. |
What the research says
Every claim, with its source
For each ingredient: what the studies found, what kind of study it was, and what it does not show. We link the paper so you can read it yourself.
Bentonite
A swelling clay with a large surface area, valued for binding and lifting.
- Human trial
In a randomised trial (144 reactive participants), a lotion with 5% of a modified bentonite reduced poison ivy reactions when applied beforehand.
Marks JG et al., 1995. J Am Acad Dermatol 33:212-6 - Safety assessment
Bentonite was judged safe in cosmetics; the concern is inhaling the dry dust.
Elmore AR, 2003. Int J Toxicol 22 Suppl 1:37-102
What it does not show. That trial used a chemically modified bentonite in a leave-on lotion. It does not carry over to plain bentonite in a bar you rinse off, and we do not say the bar protects skin.
- Human trial
Charcoal
It gives the Midnight bar its colour. We make no skin claim for it.
- Expert review
A dermatology review found charcoal generally safe, but clinical evidence does not support claims that it treats acne.
Sanchez N et al., 2020. Clin Dermatol 38(2):262-264
What it does not show. Human skin evidence for charcoal in cleansers is essentially absent.
- Expert review
Multani mitti (Fuller's earth)
An absorbent clay. That property is well measured, enough that researchers test it for lifting unwanted substances off skin.
- Lab study
A fuller's earth suspension recovered about 90% of a test chemical from skin, against 54% for water alone.
Roul A et al., 2017. J Appl Toxicol 37(12):1527-36 - Lab study
On human skin in vitro, fuller's earth significantly reduced how much of a test chemical passed through.
Thors L et al., 2017. Chem Biol Interact 273:82-89
What it does not show. These are decontamination studies, not sebum studies. No human trial shows that multani mitti reduces facial oil, so we say it absorbs, not that it controls oil.
- Lab study
Shea butter
The base of every bar is a soap made with shea butter.
- Expert review
Shea butter is among the plant oils reviewed for emollient and barrier effects on skin.
Lin TK et al., 2017. Int J Mol Sci 19(1):70 - Human trial
In a 21-person trial, shea butter did not reduce irritation already caused by a harsh surfactant.
Lodén M, Andersson AC, 1996. Br J Dermatol 134(2):215-20
What it does not show. In soap, most of the shea becomes soap, and the bar is rinsed off. So we make no barrier repair claim.
- Expert review
Soap and your skin
Every true soap is alkaline. We say so rather than call a bar pH balanced.
- Human trial
Soaps measured pH 9.1 to 10.5, and skin pH rose more after washing with soap than with a pH 5.5 cleanser.
Gunathilake HM et al., 2007. Ceylon Med J 52(4):125-9 - Expert review
High pH and harsh surfactants cause after-wash tightness; lipids in a cleanser can reduce the damage.
Ananthapadmanabhan KP et al., 2004. Dermatol Ther 17 Suppl 1:16-25
What it does not show. Clay does not make soap pH balanced. If your skin is very dry or easily irritated, a pH 5.5 wash may suit your face better than any bar.
- Human trial
Essential oils
Each bar is scented with an essential oil. These naturally contain fragrance allergens such as linalool and limonene.
- Expert review
Nearly 80 essential oils have caused contact allergy, mostly from pure oils or high concentrations.
de Groot AC, Schmidt E, 2016. Dermatitis 27(4):170-5 - Human trial
In 4,731 patch-tested patients, about 5% reacted to oxidised limonene and 6% to oxidised linalool.
Audrain H et al., 2014. Br J Dermatol 171(2):292-7
What it does not show. The risk is lower in a rinse-off bar but not zero. If you react to fragrance, patch-test on the inner arm first.

What we do not claim
- That it treats, cures or prevents acne or any skin condition. A soap is a cosmetic.
- That it is antibacterial, detoxes, or draws out toxins.
- That it is pH balanced. Every true soap is alkaline.
- That it repairs the skin barrier, brightens, or is hypoallergenic.
